"Charlie
Wood's Stoma"
is
a medallion quilt commemorating my father's bout with cancer.
In October, 1993, at age 79, a malignant tumor was found on
his larynx, or voice box. The medallion of the quilt consists
of the white plastic mesh radiation mask which is an actual
life cast of my father's face and neck. The center medallion
consists of prints of various shades of blue, my father's favorite
color, and strips of Seminole patchwork, his tribal affiliation.
The two red and white bands are produced by Seminole patchwork
and symbolize cigarettes. The band of handprints are actual
tracings of the hands of nine of the people who traveled along
the healing path of Charlie Wood. My father's handprints are
in the center of the bottom band and the light brown ones are
those of my husband who is Anglo. My father died June 10, 1997.
